Obama in town

Zach and I were lucky enough to see Obama in person for the second time in the past couple of years here in Las Vegas. This time was particularly exciting with the election so soon. Yesterday we both voted. Today we stood in the hot hot sun (it is the end of october, c'mon fall!!) for about 4 hours to see a brief appearance and ever familiar speech by the next President of the United States. We, as most people, have most of the facts that are mentioned in speeches memorized by now (with the exception of the latest mention of McCain comparing Obama to Bush!!! haha!) but what was interesting was just being involved in the movement. The protesters were fun to "take in". I have included some photos. wow. In the middle of Obama's speech he had to stop and ask a medic to go up to the balcony bc it seemed that someone fainted up there from the heat. It is almost November and we were sweating and I have a sunburn. Have I mentioned my love for Las Vegas lately? On our walk back to our car we happened to be blocked at an intersection that we needed to walk across by the motorcade which was quite a production. I spotted Obama inside on of the 3 identical tan SUV's smiling and waving at us from behind the window. very cool. The guy in the vehicle behind—not so cool. Very mean-looking holding a HUGE gun. So, Clayton, you still have me beat, you know with shaking his hand and all, but I got as close as i could:) I honestly cannot wait for this election to be over. It is such a stress-out not knowing the outcome for SUCH an important election. I am very happy that we are in a battleground state but I am not getting overly hopeful bc of what happened last time. I remember standing in my office in Winston-Salem, NC trying to fathom the fact that Bush had REALLY gotten re-elected. But, I am very hopeful. Very hopeful we will get a smart politician for President very very soon.

Zombie Pub Crawl IV: Spawn of Death

upon entering a bar in minneapolis we appeared to be the ONLY non-zombies. about 1500 people dressed as zombies overtook the city.

One Year Ago . . .

It has been a year since our wedding day! I was asked by my husband to take last Friday off. All I knew is that he had gotten plane tickets. We were going somewhere to celebrate this anniversary, although i had no idea where. I wrote down my top 5 ideas of possible places about a month ago. None of them were right! I actually got through security, holding the ticket and not looking at it. We got to the cul-de-sac part of the airport where our gate was and Zach said our gate was one the gates. . . . I walked around and the last one I came upon had a long name. I walked towards it until it came into focus. Minneapolis. He was taking me back to the bridge where he proposed! We stayed and the adorable (and very very nice) Nicollet Island Inn. Right on the Mississippi. Surrounded by autumn foliage. About a 5 minute walk to our bridge. It was SO SO nice to be back there! When i walked in the hotel room the first thing I saw was the very familiar top to our wedding cake which I had not seen since last October 20th. Next to it was an identical bottle of champagne that Zach proposed with and the T&Z napkins from our wedding. Unbelievable. So so sweet. We walked all around Minneapolis for the next couple of days. The cake and bridge were my favorite part:)

Zach's 35th

It was another Blue Hawaii Birthday for Zach this year. . . . Christian helped me organize a surprise event at our place . . . complete with Blue Hawaiis and Blue Hawaii. The next night (on his actual bday) I surprised him with a night at the Stratosphere. Perhaps the only casino we had yet to enter for one reason or another (it is the tall space needle looking one). The reason for our visit was to see an Elvis impersonator, since on his 30th I surprised him with an impersonator show as well . . . in Gatlinburg, TN! So, we have progressed from Gatlinburg to Vegas . . . the next 5 year tradition will be the big 40! i wonder what city we will be in then. Oh and we cannot forget to include in the cheesiness of 5 year increment bday traditions that we got another caricature. on the top of the stratosphere. which i will not include in the post.

The Fam Meets Barack Obama

An example of why I should live in Nashville and not Las Vegas. My family all headed over to Al Gore's home after the debate and hung out with Barack Obama! Here is a photo of Clayton and Sloan at Al's house. Sloan, I thought you were a republican!!

Palin Flow Chart

Seriously, if (heaven forbid) McCain became President and (heaven forbid) something were to happen to him, would we really want someone who winked at the camera 3 times during a national debate to be leading the country? Especially these days? Not to mention someone who JUST got her first passport and has never left the continent and "has been at it 5weeks"? I am confused why this is an option.

david byrne in nashville

zach and i were lucky enough to catch David Byrne (songs of daivd byrne and brian eno tour) when we were in nashville for saylo's wedding. because the show took place at the ryman (former Grand Ole Opry) he quickly learned a couple of country standards, “There Stands the Glass” and “Half as Much,” to give a tribute to playing in music city in such a historic building. he was in all white as were his dancers - the dancers' role varied from esoteric dancing with office chairs to acrobatic routines to larger numbers involving the background vocalist. i thought the show was great and zach actually put it in his top 5 of all time. we grabbed a hatch show print of the tour before leaving and will add it to our growing collection.

Below is a blog he posted about his nashville visit:

In Nashville, I stopped by a great local record store, Grimey’s, and signed a bunch of old records and various odds and ends. Mostly though it was just to say hello. Kurt from the group Lambchop stopped by — also on his bike, as he lives nearby — and gave me a copy of their new CD. There was a lot of talk about the gas shortage in the area, which was news to me, as there has been no mention of it in the national news. Many gas stations have closed (temporarily, they hope) because they can’t get gas. Hurricane-related disruptions on the Colonial Pipeline, which runs from the Gulf to New Jersey, are the reason, so we are told. It seems pretty serious, at least around here. The guys at the record store said no one has been in lately since everyone is conserving gas. People spend hours searching for a station with gas, and then they have to wait in line, sometimes for hours. Some folks can’t get to work, as they are totally reliant on their cars for transport.

they stole zach's idea

zach had this idea like 5 years ago. sure enough someone else beat him to the punch.
ah, also anthropologie is now housing their receipts in the same bags stamped like we did for our reply cards in our wedding invitations!

Musical Road Hits Sour Notes With Neighbors

Local officials say it was a mistake to allow a television commercial company to grind grooves into a stretch of desert roadway near Lancaster to enable car tires to play a song -- "The William Tell Overture" -- as people drive over it.

The sounds are disturbing people in a nearby subdivision, the Daily News reports. The City of Lancaster plans to pave over the musical grooves Tuesday.

Persons driving the posted 55 miles an hour west on Avenue K, in the high desert about five miles west of the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, hear about 38 musical notes of the well-known theme, also known as the overture to "The Lone Ranger."

American Honda has paid for the promotion as part of a television ad campaign set to air this fall, but amateurs have peppered YouTube with homemade renditions of their own vehicles rolling over the grooves.

The road is tuned to a car just exactly the length, and equipped with tires the same size, as a Honda Civic, a spokesman for Honda said. But other vehicles are also successful in playing the notes, if a little off-key.

That noise is not exactly music to the ears of persons living in a nearby subdivision, who are telling the Daily News that the notes blend into a cacophony that keeps them awake at night.

"When you hear it late at night, it will wake you up from a sound sleep," said music critic Brian Robin, who lives a half mile away from the project. "It's awakened my wife three or four times a night," he told the newspaper.

But people from elsewhere are delighted. "I think it's kind of cool," said Peggy Hager of Llano. "When you are driving out on Avenue K, you're going out to the middle of nowhere. It's a nice surprise to come across this thing."

Avenue K got its groove on Sept. 5, and the sour notes from neighbors soon reached a crescendo at City Hall, said Pauline East, the Antelope Valley Film Office liaison officer. The street was volunteered to help attract filmmakers and their dollars to the High Desert, she said.

"Was it historic? Yes," she told the Daily News.

"Maybe the wrong location? Obviously. We thought it was far enough away."

kate gets married!

zach's sister kate got married last weekend in a beautiful ceremony in the backyard of the home zach grew up in charleston, south carolina. they live on the atlantic intercoastal waterway and we spent a lot of time on their dock on our visit. we saw several dolphins and although we could not see them when we were out there at night we could hear them breath out above the water. hurricane hannah did not win and it was a gorgeous day. these are the first photos i have been able to get my hands on so far. i am sure there will be many more to come and i am still searching for a video of the first dance as it was quite impressive. we are so very happy as we could not imagine a better husband for kate than ben pittard. a super great guy. we like him more every time we are able to spend time with him. they make each other so happy and we are just very glad to have him a part of the growing family! cheers to ben and kate and congrats to the brockhouses for putting on an amazing party!

who knew

I just learned from my new friend, last.fm, that the one and only britta phillips was the voice of JEM! britta was in one of my favorite bands, luna. currently in a lovely duo called dean and britta (with dean wareham from luna). had no idea she was the voice of jem ("truly outrageous"). i loved jem as a child and remember the day in like second grade when mom picked me up from school and presented me with a jem doll. i remember the doll had a really cool pink dress on. and that is all.

the latest

Dear Me, Mom, Dad, and Zach,

Apparently you are not the only ones who read my blog. I recently became aware that my blog had a setting in it which made it searchable. For example, if you type someone's name or a hotel (that may or may not be a client we work on. apparently that is top secret) it will take you to my link. I have since turned off that setting. Less creepy. Now I can go ahead, confidently in my dorky entries without the fear that my client, boss, etc is reading about what my cats did today.

with that being said. here is the latest.

the casstevens came to vegas! it was a great trip. it gave zach and i a good reason to visit the liberace museum which i used to pass everyday on my way to work. the costume room was amazing. i am attaching a photo of dad posing with his favorite of the costumes, the stars and stripes hot pants number. esther treated us with spa treatments at red rock and dad treated us with a fun dinner at tao. i am very excited because claire is starting school at vassar in new york this week!!! cannot believe it.

zach and i returned last weekend from NYC. the main purpose of the trip was to see zach's team (um . . our team, i mean) play the last game we will ever see them play in the historic yankee stadium before they tear it down. here is the amazing part. they actually won! usually if zach's presence is detected in the stadium they will lose, no doubt. but it was a grueling 13 innings of not much happening. until finally the yankees got that extra run making the score 3 to 2. all i cared about was the fact that i got my stadium hot dog and popcorn. we had really good seats as you can see in the one of Jeter's back to us. Mom and Steve kindly got the tickets and airfare despite their loyalty to the Boston Red Sox. that is love.

i think the other highlight of the trip may have been just walking around and getting knishes off the carts. well, there were other highlights. we saw zach's friend keith from SVA who photographed our wedding, we also met up with zach's ex boss who led us into a bar surrounded by rockabillie asians in the east village. this is where the inevitable happened. shake face.

but of course, the biggest news of the day is Biden has been chosen for Obama's Vice President.
