who knew

I just learned from my new friend, last.fm, that the one and only britta phillips was the voice of JEM! britta was in one of my favorite bands, luna. currently in a lovely duo called dean and britta (with dean wareham from luna). had no idea she was the voice of jem ("truly outrageous"). i loved jem as a child and remember the day in like second grade when mom picked me up from school and presented me with a jem doll. i remember the doll had a really cool pink dress on. and that is all.

the latest

Dear Me, Mom, Dad, and Zach,

Apparently you are not the only ones who read my blog. I recently became aware that my blog had a setting in it which made it searchable. For example, if you type someone's name or a hotel (that may or may not be a client we work on. apparently that is top secret) it will take you to my link. I have since turned off that setting. Less creepy. Now I can go ahead, confidently in my dorky entries without the fear that my client, boss, etc is reading about what my cats did today.

with that being said. here is the latest.

the casstevens came to vegas! it was a great trip. it gave zach and i a good reason to visit the liberace museum which i used to pass everyday on my way to work. the costume room was amazing. i am attaching a photo of dad posing with his favorite of the costumes, the stars and stripes hot pants number. esther treated us with spa treatments at red rock and dad treated us with a fun dinner at tao. i am very excited because claire is starting school at vassar in new york this week!!! cannot believe it.

zach and i returned last weekend from NYC. the main purpose of the trip was to see zach's team (um . . our team, i mean) play the last game we will ever see them play in the historic yankee stadium before they tear it down. here is the amazing part. they actually won! usually if zach's presence is detected in the stadium they will lose, no doubt. but it was a grueling 13 innings of not much happening. until finally the yankees got that extra run making the score 3 to 2. all i cared about was the fact that i got my stadium hot dog and popcorn. we had really good seats as you can see in the one of Jeter's back to us. Mom and Steve kindly got the tickets and airfare despite their loyalty to the Boston Red Sox. that is love.

i think the other highlight of the trip may have been just walking around and getting knishes off the carts. well, there were other highlights. we saw zach's friend keith from SVA who photographed our wedding, we also met up with zach's ex boss who led us into a bar surrounded by rockabillie asians in the east village. this is where the inevitable happened. shake face.

but of course, the biggest news of the day is Biden has been chosen for Obama's Vice President.

from Pawleys to Vegas

A restaurant my parents and I have been going to since I was young during our annual Pawleys Island visits has moved to Vegas. Ironically, our agency has done the work for them on identity, logos, etc. Now Louis has decided to focus all of his attention here in Vegas, closing the Pawleys Island one:(

Louis Osteen is one jolly man.

“I’ve found out what the meaning of a good life is,” Osteen said. “If you are happy, your life is good. If you aren’t happy, your life isn’t good. It takes different things to make people happy, but I’m happy.”

The 66-year-old restaurateur, owner of Louis’s At Pawleys and The Fish Camp Bar in Pawleys Island, will close his businesses Sept. 5, when his lease is up, to better focus energies on ventures in Las Vegas and beyond.

“It’s a decision I made to make my life a whole lot simpler, instead of me and Marlene (his sweetheart whom he married in 1979) going back and forth all the time,” said Osteen, a chef who clinched 2004 American Express Best Chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation, the Oscars of food competition.

The property Osteen will vacate, however, has caught the interest of others.

“We have been talking with the owners of the Hammock Shops about putting in a restaurant at that location, and we will be able to release specific details [about] that very shortly,” said Laura Bright, director of marketing for Maverick Southern Kitchens, an independent restaurant and hospitality management company based in Charleston. The company’s businesses include High Cotton, Maverick Bar & Grill in Charleston and Greenville and Slightly North of Broad in Charleston.

In November, Osteen opened Louis’s Las Vegas and The Fish Camp in Las Vegas --- a venture that cost around $7 million.

A native of Anderson, Osteen was determined then, as he is now, to let more and more folks know that the South rules.

“Everything at The Fish Camp and Louis’s Las Vegas is about the South,” said Osteen in a phone interview Wednesday from Las Vegas. “The South is where I am from, and it is an awfully good place. The South has given America all of its original music. The field chants the slaves sung on the plantations turned into blues, then that turned into jazz and then that turned into rock and roll. The people in the Appalachian Mountains gave us bluegrass music. The South has given this country lots and lots and lots and lots of journalists and authors. And the South has the juiciest food. So, why not promote the South?”

At the eateries in Las Vegas, Osteen said he has cotton on a wall, other walls covered in cypress and kudzu on the ceiling.

Osteen, who has three daughters and five grandchildren, has been in the restaurant business since 1974. He opened in Pawleys Island the first time in 1980 and then again in March 2002.

“They are people coming in a lot for their favorite dishes before it goes,” said Bonnie Brewer, wine director and a manager for Osteen in Pawleys Island.

Osteen’s creamy grits (made with salt, pepper, cream, butter and milk) that is served with jumbo shrimp with a creamy reddish-brown gravy is arguably deemed the best on the Grand Strand by customers.

Osteen plans to teach others how to cook with Southern flair and in the future help other guys open places in Florida and New York.

“I’m not going to own the places,” Osteen said. “I’ll just be sitting back and getting my check. And then I’ll go back to make sure they are cooking the grits right.”

Osteen said he has a good family of employees working in Pawleys Island (about a total of 90 during the peak of summer).

“None of them are worried about finding a job,” he said.

His time in the business of food has allowed him to develop a resume that earns respect from restaurant industry insiders and outsiders.

“Certainly, it is upsetting,” said James Clark, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes executive chef. “I hate to see him go, but I wish him all the luck in Las Vegas. He will be greatly missed because he is loved by so many.”

Clark, 37, worked with Osteen at Louis’s Charleston Grill and Louis’s, which were both in Charleston.

“He has been one of my mentors, and working with him has really opened a lot of doors for me,” Clark said.

Osteen’s patrons said they will miss the food and the environment of his Pawleys Island spots.

“The community is going to suffer,” said Margaret Moore, a resident of the Burgess community in Horry County. “Pawleys Island is going to suffer. I love his place because you can bring your family, and the children enjoyed playing (on the playground). It’s really a great social place.”

Moore never actually ate at the restaurant, but she went there to enjoy live music performed by Deas Guyz – a group that plays a lively mix of Motown hits, soul and Southern rock.

Rose Rock, a Georgetown County resident and an author, enjoyed the food and atmosphere.

“I love the ambience, and I love the people,” Rock said. “The people I met there were always interesting, and they were friendly. The food was excellent, and the service was excellent, too. I just loved it.”

Osteen said he and his wife are enjoying a good life, and his friends and fans should know he could pop up anywhere.

“I’ll be around from time to time because every day is a new day,” Osteen said. “And I know I am not going to retire until I make so money…Right now, I’m enjoying Las Vegas because it is fun, it is wild and it is crazy. You have to have fun because life is too short, and you have to have all the fun you can.”

this is the stupidest ad i have ever seen.

"EARTHQUAKE!!"

this is the text i got from zach yesterday morning while he was in L.A.
Sure enough, about 10 minutes later it was all over the news.

here is a clip of filming during Judge Judy.

AIGA Las Vegas Work Show Awards

This award show was held last saturday and judged by designers I have admired for years:
Anne Willoughby, Bill Grant, and Stanley Hainsworth.

The Four Seasons Ocean Residences book I did won people's choice at the event and the first Montage Beverly Hills book picked up a silver and also won for best technical excellence.

Comments from the judges were pretty amusing as it was apparent they were shocked to see quality work coming out of Vegas.

Kate's Wedding Invites

The wedding invitation station over here is in full swing. I am thinking of hiring a new employee by the name of Zach today to help with tissue wrapping pieces of wood. I am not sure though as this zach has weird hours that he makes around baseball games. the wood invitation part has arrived. here is a sneak peak. these were set on my calendar to go out TODAY. however, i need the boxes to be finished with the calligraphy and those are in nashville at the moment. so. they will go out soon. very very soon.

vacation day across the street

zach and i cashed in our 2 free massages we got for xmas on saturday. we waited for the stress to build as long as we felt it unhealthy. the time was now. we set our alarms at 6:30am so that we could grab one of the 3 cabanas at the private spa pool and spend the day there at the pool and spa after our massages. other than interference from an overweight oblivious couple it was a nice day. people here tend to have no awareness of the people around them.

BAD movies

zach and i wasted precious hours and precious dollars watching 2 unwatchable movies this weekend. the first was and awful film called "semi-pro" during which any remotely funny moment whatsoever had already been viewed in the trailor.
the second was called "across the universe". a musical with a beatles soundtrack and references here and there to their songs and career. so glad george and john aren't around to have to have seen this one.

work travels

i recently took 2 quick trips to scout for photo shoots in cabo, mexico and deer valley, UT. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of deer valley that do it justice but here are some snapshots of our cabo location taken by me and my co-worker tory kooyman (art buyer / producer of the project). we were guided around in a super-tough mule vehicle over acres and acres of desert land. saw some iguanas, lots of lizards, a roadrunner and many birds that tory knew the names of (he used to study penguins in antarctica so he knows a thing or two about birds). almost stepped on a dead snake . . . the most impressive part of the trip was the sustainability effort of all plantlife. each and every living plant that is on the land has been carefully dug up, put in a crate for 6 weeks, and then transferred to a 7-acre nursery. . . . when the resort and residence building is complete they will replant all of these native plants around the property.
