our weekend in L.A.

was great. we went to spaceland to see the veils, a fantastic band. matt and paul had told me "nux vomica" was the best album of 2006 but i was not sure. till i saw them perform. great great show.
then zach and i did a tour of the local michaels on saturday and then had a cookout at matt's. i can't decide what the highlight of the trip was:

a) the veils show
b) trying to attract bats by throwing aluminum covered corn into the air at night
c) watching matt dance/play a wii game where he was disco dancing while killing evil rabbits.

all and all, as is perfectly clear, it was a successful trip.

above are some veils pix. unfortunately (i really stress this word) i do not have photos of example "b" or "c". what was i thinking?

thanks cats.

remember that previous post where i was overjoyed with the stink-finder bc it helped me find the stink? well, the stink actually ended up lingering and i could not figure out why. until last week. inside several of my shoes (mine, none of zach's) was the most horrific smelling crystallized cat pee i have ever seen/smelled. after trying a few methods to salvage, to no avail, these shoes end up in the trash can. my red heels from san francisco and my blue flats from london. zach's spot in cannes

Grocery Store

Posted Jan 18, 2007

Cornered, a man uses fine dining as his Las vegas alibi.

the "grocery store" spot that zach concepted for the las vegas visitors authority has made it in the "short list" of the Cannes Lions Awards.

The Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival (IAF) is generally regarded as the most prestigious international advertising festival. The five to seven day festival is held annually in the city of Cannes, France, usually in the third week of June, with 2007 marking the 54th occasion the festival has been held. Although the festival also features seminars, workshops and social events for people in the advertising industry, the primary purpose of the festival is to present the Lion awards for the advertisements and advertising campaigns adjudged the best of the year. Although the award ceremony is held in France, the company that conducts the festival is British.

Lions are awarded in a number of categories, including cinema/television, print marketing, outdoor advertising and direct marketing. The festival introduced an award category for online media in 1998, known as the "Cyber Lion". Curiously, the festival only created a category for radio advertising in 2005. In 2006 "Promo Lions" were added and in 2007 "Integrated Lions" will be added.

The festival also has categories for overall advertising campaigns and for technical achievement. In each case a Gold Lion is awarded to the top entrant in that category. A final "Grand Prix" for best advertisement of the year will then be awarded to one of the Gold Lion winners. Additionally, Lions are awarded in various subcategories, such as for specific market segments (eg. charities) or for specific attributes of the advertising (e.g. "Best Use of Music".) The festival also awards an annual "Palme d'Or" to the top agency for the year.

Advertisements are generally entered by the agencies that created them, although technically anyone can enter any advertising creation. Judging is then conducted by juries composed of advertising creative directors from around the world, and the jurors are instructed to reward the advertising that is most creative both in idea and execution. Each jury is headed by a jury president. Recent jury presidents in the film category include Bob Isherwood (Saatchi & Saatchi) and Dan Wieden (Wieden + Kennedy). Jurors are disqualified from voting on entries from their own country.

By Chris Bunting with David Landsel

Live the good life at sea onboard Four Seasons’ new Ocean

June 5, 2007 -- LIVE LARGE
Rumored for years to actually be happening, Toronto-based Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts has finally reached an agreement with the developers of a 13-deck, 719-foot luxury liner with just 112 fully owned residences.
That’s right: Come home to the Four Seasons. At sea. The concept’s not new, but both existing product and what’s out there in the ether isn’t nearly as exciting.
Officially called the Four Seasons Ocean Residences, the ship is set for launch in 2010. Residences range from 797 square feet (not half bad) to 7,860 (we didn’t know a boat like this had that much space to begin with!). Some will come complete with butlers, while all units will have terraces. The ship will navigate the entirety of the globe in its first year (and likely do much the same thereafter), spending over 250 days between the poles hitting all major ports of call.
A whole slew of boutiques, restaurants and typical cruise ship fun stuff, like a driving range and spa, will be on hand, while a crew of 220 will maintain order. Units range from $3.75 to $39 mil

stink-finder praise

so when we opened a christmas gift from zach's mom last holiday, finding it to be a "stink-finder" with a key code on the side of the box explaining which shape of stain is which stink, we found it a bit odd. but, man, that stink finder just came in handy BIG time. i walked into our closet when i got home from work today and was hit with the unfortunately familiar stench of stinker's(yes, it is stinker, not sadie) pee. walking all around the closet, sniffing here. sniffing there. impossible to find the source, but knowing for sure pee was lurking. somewhere. then, eureka. the stinkfinder i thought i would never use. we turned off the light, turned on the S.F. and started scanning the property. nothing. nothing. nothing. BINGO!!! 3 huge spots of flourescent shining urine. spots completely invisible to the naked eye. brilliant. you will be happy to know, that along with the stink finder is a bottle of de-stinker. i promptly dispersed the entire bottle between the three spots. take that stinker. yes, the cat's name happens to be stinker. now the secret is out. we live with disgusting animals.

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the " hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

the Best Man goes to the tailor

zach recently emailed his groomsmen asking them to get measured for their suits. here is the best man's epic journey:

"I finally made it to the tailors here in Berkeley yesterday. I had stopped by in the morning and the old Chinese guy with the Giants cap who runs the place said the tailor would not be in until noon and suggested that I come back later. So on my way home from campus I stopped by and seated by the window there was a fat old Russian lady missing half her teeth and with her hair dyed that bizarre scarlet color that they only seem capable of producing in Eastern Europe. I'm sure you remember that color from Greenpoint. The old Chinese guy took out a little pad and the Russian seamstress got her measuring tape and smiled her crooked smile at me as she looked into my eyes as if measuring my character with a penetrating gaze and then asked, "Vedding?" In a dazed reflex I muttered, "Yes... a wedding" and she extended her hand to shake mine as she smiled her approval and whispered, "Congratulations..." I tried to explain that I was already married and that it was in fact my best friend who was getting married but she had already left the formalities far behind and with furrowed brow was deeply immersed in taking the measurements. She would wrap the tape measure around one or another part of my body and then yell out the numbers with a shrill decisive exclamation that registered somewhere between a chirp and a bark: Tirty-vun! Vorty-tree! Vorty-vun! Each exclamation leading the old Chinese guy to repeat some strangely distorted questioning echo: Sirty-fun? Fotty-tee? Fotty-fun? They frequently stopped as well to argue about what the proper English term was for the measurement corresponding to the number being yelled out. The old Chinese guy asking me: "What you call that sir? Ahhhhhm-hole? Ahhhhhm-lound? For sreeeeve, you know. You know?" Images of walking down the aisle at your perfect wedding in some kind of insane person's ill-fitting asymmetrical suit started to flood my brain and as the measurements ended the Russian must have sensed my doubts and fears. She grasped my hand and fixed her penetrating gaze on my eyes again and said, "Don't vorry... I tailor vorty year" while laughing with menacing glee at the worried expression on my face. In the end, I paid them five dollars and stumbled out into the street clutching a piece of paper bearing a rather cryptic scrawl of letters and numbers. I sincerely hope that these will somehow translate into a suit that will fit me. Let me know if the Nashville tailors say that these don't make any sense and I will try to find another tailor."

another piece of LV history destroyed

if you notice, the photo used on my profile here is a photo i took of the stardust sign. that sign no longer exists.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- From Stardust to just dust. The Las Vegas Strip's first mass-market casino-hotel was imploded early Tuesday in a hail of fireworks to make way for Boyd Gaming Corp.'s $4.4 billion megaresort Echelon.

Hundreds of people partied beneath tents and on makeshift patios before Boyd chairman Bill Boyd's four grandsons pushed a plunger to detonate the former Stardust casino. The blast generated a massive dust cloud that chased the revelers into cars, buses and nearby casinos.

''It hurts. We cried,'' said Sheila Navarro, 51, a school supplies buyer from Oxnard, Calif., who took shelter in the nearby Frontier casino-hotel. She came with three sisters, her mother, an aunt and a brother-in-law to say farewell to the casino she's gambled at for more than 30 years.

''It's very hard for me to find another casino to go to,'' she said. ''Maybe in two years, three years, I'll have different feelings, but right now, my heart is broken.''

The casino opened July 2, 1958, billing itself as the world's largest resort hotel with 1,032 rooms. It was credited with being Las Vegas' first mass-market casino, thanks to cheap rates and loss-leading food and drinks.

Bob Boughner, Echelon Resorts' chief executive, said while the Stardust was a favorite of the nostalgia crowd, it was missing out on younger patrons and those who come to Las Vegas for conventions.

For many, the Stardust represented the most accessible place to stay in a city that gives VIP treatment to the biggest gamblers. But the concept of discounting rates to keep people coming is rapidly fading from the Las Vegas Strip as many casinos nowadays make more revenue from hotel rooms, clubs, shows and cuisine than from gambling.

''There was this implicit idea that invisible high rollers came in and funded everything, so that Mr. and Mrs. America could have a steak for $2 and see Frank Sinatra for the price of a drink,'' said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

''Now you can build a 7,000-room hotel and charge $300 a night for rooms,'' he said. ''With slots being so big, it is all the people losing $200 per trip that are driving the growth.''

The implosion turned a 32-story tower, gutted to its barest concrete and steel over the past three months, into the tallest building ever felled on the Strip.

LVI Services Inc. used 428 pounds of explosives to destroy the casino's two towers. Twenty water cannons sprayed the dust cloud, which blanketed the area in gray ash, and the main drag of the 24-hour gambling mecca was temporarily shut down.

The clean up of the site was expected to take up to two months.

The Stardust became as famous for its stellar, 188-foot sign and marquee as its mob connections. The Strip institution was the inspiration for the 1995 movie ''Casino,'' in which Robert De Niro played a character inspired by Frank ''Lefty'' Rosenthal, who ran the casino-hotel in the mid-1970s.

But as regulators cracked down on skimming in later years, Boyd was brought in as an operator in 1983 and bought the Stardust in 1985 when the owners lost their gambling license.

In the next two decades, the property's luster began to fade. ''Lido de Paris,'' the showgirl extravaganza that starred illusionists Siegfried and Roy for more than a decade, wrapped up in 1991 after a 32-year run.

Crooner Wayne Newton brought nostalgia back to the aging clientele in 2000 but called it a wrap in April 2005.

And in each of last year's three quarters before its official closure Nov. 1, the Stardust made less money than the previous year.

The Echelon is to open in late 2010 with more than 5,000 hotel rooms, a production theater, concert venue, shopping mall and more than 1 million square feet of meeting space.

bye bye, CDI

friday was my last day at CDI, the design firm that I have worked at for over a year. i got oddly emotional as i was trying to make it out at the end of my last day. brian presented me with a special gift, a red pen, with which he graced many of my designs with - ALWAYS making it better somehow. he encouraged me to be my own editor. yes. dan came over to talk with me and i had that horrible feeling you have when you think you are just about to lose it right there. eddie carried my things out to my car. it is a tight little group, not without its issues here and there. but its a family i had to leave. i got in my car and cried all the way home. what a dork i am.

i will miss all of them.

Rules and Tips for Those New to Las Vegas

zach sent this to me today. its very true but am disappointed in the lack of comment on the mass amount of vanity license plates.

1. You must first learn how to pronounce the city name. It is: Loss Vay-gas,

2. The morning rush hour if from 5 a.m. to noon. The evening rush hour is from noon to 7 p.m. Friday’s rush hour starts Thursday morning.

3. The minimum acceptable speed on most freeways is 85 mph. On U.S. 95, your speed is expected to match the highway number. On I-15, your speed will match the highway number.

4. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Las Vegas has its own version of traffic rules. For example, cars/trucks with the loudest muffler go first at a four-way stop; the trucks with the biggest tires go second. However, SUV-driving, cell-phone-talking moms ALWAYS have the right of way.

5. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed out and possible shot.

6. Never honk at anyone, for any reason. Ever. Seriously, it’s another offense that can get you shot.

7. Road construction is permanent and continuous in Las Vegas. Detour barrels are moved around for your entertainment pleasure during the middle of the night to make the next day’s driving experience a bit more exciting.

8. Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, skunks, dogs, barrels, cones, cows, horses, cats, mattresses, shredded tires, squirrels, rabbits, crows, vultures, roadrunners, and the coyotes feeding on any of these.

9. If someone actually has their turn signal on, wave them to the shoulder immediately to let them know it has been “accidentally activated.”

10. For summer driving, it is advisable to wear potholders on your hands.

11. If you are in the left lane and driving only 70 in a 55-65 mph zone, you’re considered a road hazard and will be “flipped off” accordingly. If you return the flip, you will be shot.

joshua tree national park

we headed back out to pioneertown this weekend. saw a show at pappy and harriets and stayed in the ole 'ricky lee jones' room at the lodge. the next day we stopped through joshua tree national park on our way home. it was a beautiful day. we were able to see palm springs and even across the border at some mountains in mexico from keys point. we climbed all over skull rock. yes, i could go on and on, but it is way past my bedtime.

a perfect rainbow

i saw the most AMAZING perfect rainbow i have ever seen in my life this morning. i left my house noting that it was freakishly windy out. debris everywhere. no way that zach would be able to ride his bike to work in this weather. i was rounding the corner out of my neighborhood and a bright colorful light caught my eye. i followed its perfectly symmetrical and bright curve to its other end. I could see each end in perfect detail. the light was so bright, like someone was at each end, shining brightly colored spotlights from the ground. one end started in front of the red mounain and the other seemed to end right into zach's building. the entire thing was perfect. i hope it is a sign.

BARACK and the HOFF

I managed to see both of these people in person back to back. Barack (we took some photos above) delivered an uplifting speech about what he is going to do with the country while I got sunburned. It is early in the race, but it I had to vote on the spot right now, he has my vote. I like him. oh, i like his logo too.

David Hasslehoff (so unfortunately not pictured here) was even more entertaining playing a very gay man in the Producers. Another comped ticket (Paris Casino is a client of Zach's Ad Agency) took us there. It really was not nearly as bad as I had hoped. He is not that attractive in a dress.

our new friend Bruce

Bruce is our new friend. Bruce seems to have nothing to do in life. he drives around our cookie cutter neighborhood and pauses in horror in front of our house. he goes home and excitedly writes us a letter about how we have a few strands of grass growing back near the side of our house. the kind of grass where you have to stop, get out of your vehicle, investigate and have your day ruined at the sight of the greeness. we sprayed it with weed killer and again got distracted with our busy lives. today we got an especially fond love letter from Bruce saying he will fine us $100 if the matter is not resolved in 10 days and included a blank sheet of lined paper on which we are to explain ourselves and send back to him. ah, Bruce, what an exciting life you have. I will say that i had not even noticed the "overgrowth" of the grass strands. i have noticed, however, the infestation of dirty pigeons that live in the front yard of the neighbor across from us and the house on the corner that still has full-on xmas decorations up. maybe they are friends with Bruce too. I sure hope so.

nose-picker

today i laughed harder than i have in awhile. i heard my art-director say, "you gotta take a look at this." what i saw was beautiful. some guy was outside our office facing the building next to us VORACIOUSLY picking his nose. he was using the window as a mirror, somehow not realizing? that there was a woman sitting at her desk RIGHT there behind the window. and he didn't stop. he kept going and going. pushing his nose up with one hand and digging with the other. head tilted way back. at one point he walked away a few steps but quickly returned to do some more digging. little did he know that our whole office, and most likely, the entire office of the building he was using as a mirror was staring in awe/amusement. wow. gave me my second wind to finish the work day.

being a graphic designer in las vegas

was interesting today. working at a small place and for a non-profit agency i found myself wearing more than one hat. actually i wore boots. tall ones. white leather ones. all in the name of graphic design and charity. i think the campaign is going to end up really cool though. will post when done. then at the end of an odd day of an all day photo shoot unlacing and relacing shoes i was asked to stay late. was at work until after 10pm concepting for an opening night ad for an incredibly upscale gentleman's club. we usually don't take on this genre of client. but this time did for a variety of reasons. we took photos of the interior of the place and they actually have showers in there. I guess pole dancing is for the lower tier clubs. This is the type of place where men drop around $5,000 in cash in a night. they have 2 of the best sommeliers in the world, so after hearing our ideas for the ad the client chimed in with a few of his own. i am just going to paraphrase out the crass language. basically horrible photo shoot ideas with lines like "not one, but two." and "a great piece of meat" referring to their in-house 5 star restaurant. nice. yep. a graphic designer in vegas. just as i hoped it would be.
